Phantom Hourglass (Soon to come)
I wrote a review of Phantom Hourglass, but it's really really long, and it crashes and burns (feels rambly, flow is bad).
Then I got writer's block and couldn't fix it. So maybe I can get it out soon.
I bought GUN, and I'll try to get a "First Impressions" out on it.
Hello
See, it's not like I've been too busy to put stuff here. I just haven't felt inspired to. Which is why I like this blog, though, as I do any other blog I work on. It doesn't have a following, or any real audience, so I've got no obligations. I'm not committed.
Great thing about InstantSpot is that you can write about whatever you want, and it will get noticed eventually. It's just really... casual. Mine is, anyway. I've seen some others that are being used for resumes, or other really official stuff. So versatile.
I didn't just come back to talk about InstantSpot, though.
Game TV Idea (continued)
Just to expand on it a little more... I was about to fall asleep and I was thinking about how TV got started off. Game Shows were pretty popular at that time, and it would be possible for a certain game show channel to have multiple servers/rooms where You are 2 or 3 other people are the contestants. Just answering questions would be kind of boring... but if it were more "Dog Eat Dog" style, or even to compare it to a video game, "Mario Party" style. The idea that you do various mini-games and "may the best gamer win" kind of deal.
All those game shows have prizes, and the only thing I could think for this would to have a highscore system. And the idea of unlocking other game shows would have to be thought about, but I don't know if that one would work since you're paying for this stuff.
I thought about how it'd realistically work, and it'd probably just have to have some kind of harddrive with it, and you "download" the channels. Some channels would be single player types, or even "MMO" types, either you're playing in your own copy of the game, and it has a set story, or a changing one according to how you go through it (Heh, with that I may as well call it Interactive TV instead of 'Game TV'). Blah blah blah lots of ideas people can do, etc, etc. RPG's. Fighters. Platformers. All different channels.
The cost of developing games nowadays would probably make this Game TV thing pretty expensive to pay for, since you're getting multiple channels. That's probably one of the biggest obstacles in a lot of ideas. Money.
Game TV Idea
I hate doing double posts like this in this blog, but I just had a crazy idea.
Game TV. It's like TV with channels and
stuff, but your remote acts as a controller, and you interact directly
with the various programs of your choosing. Of course it would have
"commercials" and other advertisements, but that's when you can change
the channel just like you would a TV. See what else is on if the
channel your on doesn't fancy you.
Just like TV, though, it would probably start off small, and then you would just have to pray that various networks dive into it, or networks are created to get into this Game TV. It would only be great after you get 50 channels or so.
And as for the ideas that go into this... that'd be up to the networks. Different timeslots for different games.
I bet it'd give a job for a TON of game developers, and I imagine something of this size wouldn't be able to take off for a good while from now. A good good good while. Maybe 20 years at least. Maybe sooner... but I dunno how good of quality it'd be.
Now wouldn't THAT be the future? Yes.
Sharing how I truly feel about the games industry.
I don't think I've ever said this in this blog, but if you ever bring up certain games like Halo, you'll probably hear a good earful of how much I hate it. I mean I'm sure you've met the type before. I just wanted to take the time to say how I really feel about the games industry as a whole.
It's huge. It's great. It's a living entity of its own that people take the time to contribute, and help shape/mold it into something new. The branches are growing. Surely but steadily. The branches branch off even further than that, giving you a good variety of different things. Soon, if not already, it will be something that EVERYONE can take part in and find their own little place. As big as the "music industry" and "film industry", if not bigger (my thought of this is because games have more direct interaction compared to film and music). I believe the term "gamer" will only refer to those who really delve into this form of entertainment, similar to a "music junkie" or "film junkie".
As of now, I don't know anyone who doesn't listen to music. No one who hasn't watched movies before. Just as I don't know anyone who hasn't at least played 1 video game, even for a little bit...
I'm only sort of considering being a part of this large idea. I love video games with 3/4ths of my heart (I hesitate to say all), and would really like to look back a long time from now and say "Yep... I contributed!" Because for me, games being developed and released are like donations. Every little bit helps, even if it's small (and in this case crappy). If a game comes out and flops, there's something that can be taken from it and tweaked for another game. A better game. Pushing that genre forward, or even just a single game.
But overall, there's a place for everyone in video games. Even Halo I respect just because it's "a place in the industry". I may not like or agree with the typical views these people have, but I wouldn't want it to be any other way.
If you happen to stumble on this and read it all, tell me how you feel about what I just said, or the idea I'm talking about. Do you think the games industry could come crashing down at one point and only be flooded with awful sell outs? I wouldn't doubt it would have its phases of being "down and bland". But yea. Leave some comments. I'm sort of viewing the games industry from a "Society of its own" kind of perspective, and it only lives from the people who power it. Even people who are on the outside (people like you).
Shadow of Colossus update
I finally beat Shadow of Colossus!
About time, too, I say. Took me about 3 days of playing off and on to get to the last boss. Then after not figuring out how to beat him I just threw the game to the side. But I picked it back up today with the intent to beat it. And I did.
The ending of it was basically just a cinematic. Yea it had little tiny bits where you could do stuff during the last story-centered movie, but overall it was just like "Here you can walk around just so this ending cinematic doesn't feel so drawn out."
I guess it was just a gesture of kindness for the long credits afterward. After the credits you can save your game and tell you what you've unlocked. "You unlocked a new difficulty: You can now choose to make a New Game in 'Hard Mode'"
"You unlocked Time Attack"
I just think it's kind of funny how there's 3 songs in the entire game. One song you hear for the 15 bosses, a specific song for the final boss, and a song for the credits. Maybe the songs for the 15 bosses were different variations of one song, but I couldn't tell. It all sounded like the same recycled song. Not that it ruined the game, and not that the music was the most important feature, but if you've played, or when you do play, this game I'm sure you can understand what I mean.
But there's plenty to unlock still. In my new save game, it's a "second playthrough" kind of deal, but with the Time Attack mode, you go up to a colossi statue and pray to it, then you have to beat that boss under X minutes. After you've beaten X bosses, you unlock something. According to some cheat sites, every 2 bosses you beat you get something new.
And it's not anything lame like "Oh you get more life! Oh you get more stamina!" But things that actually add a little more to the game.
Originally you only have your sword and bow. But the first item you get is "Whistling Arrows". Arrows that whistle (imagine that!) and divert the colossus' attention. Man that would have been useful on a couple bosses first time around! But it'll definitely make more Time Attacks easier.
You get some other weapons, but the really good stuff is in the Hard Time Attack mode. You unlock THAT by beating Hard Mode. Dunno how hard Hard Mode is, though... I have yet to play it.
I thought Time Attack mode was going to be really bad. I mean I go to the first boss and do his Time Attack mode and it gives me 2:30 minutes to take him down. I was thinking "What?! I may need more time than that..." but amazingly I did it with about 50 seconds to spare. I even fell and stumbled at one point and made it.
I can only imagine what Hard Time Attack mode is going to be like. Hard Mode probably gave all the colossi laser guns and covered them in fire making them impossible to climb onto. Wouldn't that make for a good challenge -.-
Most likely they just upped the AI. How boring.
